Built by Saab AB -  the Draken was adopted by Austria to replace older subsonic aircraft and to ensure credible interception capability against high-speed intrusions. Operating primarily from bases such as Zeltweg -  the aircraft served with Jagdgeschwader units tasked with quick-reaction alert duties -  airspace policing -  and identification missions along Austria’s sensitive borders during a period of shifting European security dynamics.Throughout its Austrian career -  the Draken played an important role in neutrality enforcement and peacetime interception missions. Pilots regularly conducted scrambles to identify unknown or non-compliant aircraft transiting Alpine air corridors -  particularly during periods of instability in Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Although Austria remained militarily neutral and the Draken did not participate directly in combat conflicts -  the aircraft was heavily involved in heightened air policing operations during the Yugoslav Wars -  when regional tensions and nearby military activity demanded increased readiness. These missions underscored the Draken’s importance as a deterrent platform and its effectiveness in maintaining national airspace control without direct engagement.By 2005 -  the Austrian Draken fleet approached retirement after decades of dependable service -  culminating in the striking 45th Anniversary “Dragon Knights” retirement livery. This special scheme celebrated the legacy of Austrian Draken pilots and ground crews -  highlighting the aircraft’s long-standing role in national defense and its reputation for reliability in demanding Alpine conditions. The farewell flights represented both nostalgia and pride -  marking the conclusion of supersonic interceptor operations that had defined Austrian air defense for a generation before the transition to newer multirole fighters within the Austrian Air Force.This 1:72 scale model in the 45th Anniversary “Dragon Knights” retirement livery offers collectors a vivid tribute to one of Europe’s most distinctive Cold War interceptors -  combining eye-catching commemorative markings with the historic significance of Austria’s final Draken operations -  making it an essential centerpiece for enthusiasts of European air defense aviation.","brand":"Aviation 72","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":67689848897714,"sku":"DDS-AV72-41010","price":178.78,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0792\/4927\/7106\/files\/AV72-41010-L__88804.jpg?v=1791887669","url":"https:\/\/vroomvroom.toys\/products\/saab-draken-fighter-aircraft-21-draken-45th-anniversary-dragon-knights-retirement-livery-2005-austrian-air-force-1-72-diecast-model-airplane-by-aviation-72","provider":"The VroomVroom Toy Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
